Disease Control

Although immunisation, antibiotics, improved living standards and sanitation have all but eliminated most of the great epidemics of the past, new diseases from changing lifestyles and behaviour pose formidable control problems.

Premature mortality may have been reduced but infectious diseases still cause widespread morbidity.

Since the 1970s there has been an increase in the incidence of food poisoning diseases and occasional outbreaks of infectious diseases such as whooping cough and measles.

The Council has a statutory obligation to investigate, and take control measures for, notifiable disease incidents.
